Girl with Bow
"This piece is a self-portrait. My mom used to put big bows in my hair. This image depicts the moment when I came home from the hospital after having had my tonsils removed. You can see abstract faces in the plaits of hair. I felt betrayed and angry because I didn’t know I was going to have surgery, and I didn’t know it was going to hurt so much. This time, the bow that my mother put in my hair was bright red. I think it was her way of diverting my attention. I didn’t have a choice in either matter – the bow or the hospital."
