West

Companion to "East"

"I came across a series of extraordinary satellite photos from Google Earth, and looked at them often for inspiration. As I was thinking about what to try next with images, I had these in mind all of the time.

I wanted to create images that are similar to those large sprawling landscapes-from-space with some of the new mixed media methods I was using. Combining inks, paints, water, oils and some simple chemistry and using macro lenses to try to create something that looks like aa much larger vista.

This is one of the more successful images that came from that. To me, it really does look like a distant coast from space. I see water, land, ridges, ocean currents. I rarely can get out and the idea of some of the gorgeousness of the planet is something I get meaning from.

This feels like a satellite image of Earth to me, but also as abstract 'painting'. I don't always get quite what I'm going for but these felt right as soon as I looked through the lens. (part of a 2 image series, the other being West)
