The Expedition

"This painting was done in my high-school senior year. I was fascinated by the unique colors of the sky and desert, along with a line of travelers and camels when I read a magazine. I like the atmosphere and composition of it and feel that it tries to convey a sacred mission for their journey, so I painted this and titled "The Expedition"."

Philip Ma (he/him/his)

Cupertino, CA

"Art provides me the best communication protocol to reach others. Through lines and colors, I found an immeasurable visual expression tool without any other constraints.”

Philip Ma has shown his artistic talents since his childhood. Early on, he discovered that he could better express his thoughts and emotions through art rather than verbal communication. He is extremely sensitive to lines, colors, and perspectives of the environment, able to translate what he observes and how he feels in visual art forms with profound depths and details.

Philip’s artwork is inspired by his multicultural background. Philip describes, “Both my parents are immigrants from Taiwan for over 30 years, and the community I live in is very multi-cultural oriented. I'm very lucky to have this exposure and can embrace the beauty and diversity of different cultures as an artist.” He feels how art is global and timeless, and he aims to reflect that in his own way. He painted a series titled “Beautiful Cities Around the World” to celebrate the unique cultural accents and natural attractions of each place. He finds most satisfaction and tranquility in articulating these cultural stories with his paintbrushes and canvas.

Philip is apart of AbilityPath, an organization that provides support services to individuals with special needs and developmental disabilities in the greater Bay Area. Philip has overcome many obstacles while expanding his art appreciation through private and formal art education. His dedication to the arts arts has earned him recognition from local schools and community. In return, devotes his time to the local library, homeless shelter, and community earth day events. This connection pushes him to create artwork every day with joy and fulfillment.
