The Dunes

""The Dunes" was my first try at this particular process and style. I had seen a show a couple years before and decided to try out the process. The complexity of the pieces being added is very different than painting. Yet it ends up being a painting. We were in the midst of covid and the stress of trying to keep active and productive during the isolation was a challenge. I found that in the evening I was tired and bored just watching tv. I decided to continue my art in a different manner and atmosphere. I was able to create art and not feel like I was wasting precious art time. I had some watercolor pencils and paper and decided to try some watercolor paintings. I find watercolor wonderful but very challenging.I always feel that my watercolors are unfinished and unsuccessful. The watercolor base of Dunes brought me to the beaches of Florida when I visit family. Using the small pieces of painted paper is interesting and a whole different process of painting. I do not paint a paper w/certain colors and say I am going to put these here. I have several bags of cut up paper from unsuccessful paintings. I search for the colors I need or are close to what I want. The next process is cutting the pieces to the shape and size you need. Lastly, deciding how to place the pieces to create the shape or form you want. Some pieces are even glued on top of each other to create the layers or clumps. Sometimes the color you are looking for isn't there, therefore, you have to find another. Instead of painting the specific color you are using another. This process forces you to adjust and go with the flow. I think that is the most important element of the whole piece is that I am using randomly cut painted pieces. This process means using colors and shapes to create paintings that are spontaneous and unique."
