Surfs Up!
"Living on Florida's Gulf Coast since my early childhood, my parents, who had moved from Ohio, were in love with Florida - the weather, the beautiful beaches, lakes and rivers, the prolific flowers that grew year-round, and FISHING! I was entranced by Nature..the colors of a hummingbird's feathers, the grey and graceful Spanish Moss that dangled from the huge Oaks in our yard. Watching a thunderstorm from our windows, listening to the creaking trunks of the tall Australian Pines lining our little lane. Dad took me to the shore when the waves were high and wild, breaking against the seawall, splashing high over and over. Looking back, I should have found some of this frightening, but I only saw the beauty, the excitement of the moment, the colors of the sea, the foamy waves and the noise of the surging surf. In Surf's Up, I tried to express that feeling. Using a rather complicated pouring technique, I was able to recreate the movement, the texture of the wave with little 'cells' that form in the foamy surface of a breaking wave."
