Rat Race

"Rat Race is one of my earliest works in geometric abstraction. I had begun my artistic reinvention after major spine surgery fusing almost the entire length of my spine and those first works that came out of my imagination were of vertebra forms that were an expression of the hidden physical and psychological drama playing out in my body. An appreciation of art and especially 20th century modern art had played a role as in influence in my architectural career. Now that influence would find its way into my creativity as a visual artist. I was becoming more proficient with photoshop, and I was ready to interpret these influences in my own digital way. In Rat Race, the influence was the Color Field movement. But I would interpret it with a nod to my architecture as well. I thought back to Mondrian’s painting, Broadway Boogie Woogie and how he expressed the energy of life in the metropolis of Manhattan. The composition is an abstraction of an urban city grid with black lines, solid areas of color and blocks of black representing an urban landscape pulsating with life and energy."
