Quadrans Circuli 4
"Quadrans Circuli 4 is a song in shape and color. The form of the circle finds its way into many of my works. Why the circle? For me, the circle is the most universal and archetypal of all forms, used by all cultures from all times to the present. An outgrowth from my architecture, in some of my works I use the grid as the paradigm to organize a composition. Quadrans Circuli 4 first starts with a grid of 7 columns and 12 rows of squares representing pixels, speaking to the digital technology that is my medium. Overlapping this grid of squares is a grid of circles aligned with the rows of squares but shifted a half circle down. This overlapping of shifted grids makes for a horizontal divide of the circles. Another layer of complexity is added by splitting some of the circles into quadrants. A quadrant is each of four quarters of a circle. Sometime, all four quadrants in a circle is divided, sometimes 3 quadrants and sometimes 2 quadrants. Between the circles, the left over diamond shaped spaces divided in 2 by the overlapping square grid adds further complexity. From this arrangement of overlapping grids, like a conductor conducting a symphony with color being the musical notes, a color is assigned to each area."
