Letting Me Go
"I will never forget talking with the collectors of my first, real, big, daunting commission. They became close friends, as we worked side by side to make their large painting exactly what they had hoped. During one discussion of what was on the canvas and possible changes, I told them that the most exciting part of a painting for me was resolution. I love when there is a problem, or a conflict, so to say, happening on the canvas. I can’t paint without it! I need to solve the puzzle. That is one of the strongest voices that calls me to create. They found that fascinating! I guess I did as well, because I knew the feeling, but had never expressed it or given words to It. It sounds strange, but it was a deep moment for all of us, and a turning point in their piece. This particular painting is such a great example of that! I am constantly seeking new, different, challenging media. This is my second piece on unprimed linen. It’s a different process in many ways. I had great hopes for the results and some new design elements I had been dreaming of. It didn’t work out anything like I had thought. Somewhere in the middle I had to let my thoughts become feelings and clean out the expectations I had for it. Glad I was able to solve the puzzle with this guy!"
