Community
"Surrounding yourself with those you love provides a vital support system during life's most challenging moments. Their presence and encouragement help you navigate difficult circumstances, reminding you that you're never alone in your journey. The process of this piece began with a sketch of a group of figures, almost intertwined with one another. I selected a color palette derived from a prior study piece and developed the work using oil sticks, a pastel-like medium. I shaped and shaded the composition entirely with my fingers and a rag, allowing the forms to emerge organically through direct, tactile engagement with the medium. At the time, I was inspired by modern Cubist artists as well as tribal and African art. I was drawn to the way these artists used color and simple shapes to convey complex ideas. The composition as a whole resembles a community a mesh of figures supporting one another. Some figures appear distressed, while others are calm, symbolizing both the struggles and the support we find within our communities. The figures are almost wrapped and huddled together, reflecting the resilience and care we offer one another during challenging moments in life."
