Cochineal Torii

Cochineal Torii was inspired by the process of making cochineal ink, from cochineal insects sourced from Peru during an exploration into natural inks workshop. Cochineal ink provides a natural alternative to synthetic red dyes. A continuation of the artist's Torii series (Torii, a shinto gate, is an iconic shape and entrance structure to shinto shrines and sacred areas in Japan) inspired by her studies and time spent living in Japan. The contrast between the flat black and graphic shapes and the soft swirls of natural ink in the background invite viewers to shift their focus between what is immediately in front of them, and what lays beyond and sometimes obscured.

Prints are produced on demand on stretched canvas, acrylic plexi, or giclee fine art paper in a variety of sizes here in the United States.
