Creating a sense of place for a multifamily development

For Stoneleigh Companies, which operates over 40,000 multifamily
units in 35 cities, it's important to connect their residents with local environments. The Waterford Residential brand requires a unique touch for every location.

For Waterford Bluffs, ArtLifting drew on a number of art placement strategies to draw connections between residents, the property, and the city of Cleveland. The property features the work of 18 ArtLifting artists.

Authentically contributing to placemaking at the residences, Stoneleigh Companies commissioned ArtLifting artists to create original works celebrating the architecture of downtown Cleveland.

2-D papercut artworks by Allen Chamberland of Cleveland landmarks bring the city into the space as largescale wallcoverings and unique metal reproductions. Allen and the ArtLifting team transformed his artworks depicting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Trust Building into laser cut metal panels. The silhouettes were mounted on brushed steel to create a dramatic sky effect.

About the commission, Allen shares, “I am always looking for inspiration, and I’m really excited about how these two pieces look completed. I feel like I’ve really grown as an artist, and working with clients such as Stoneleigh Companies has really helped to push and challenge myself.”

The works also appear in a long hallway with street visibility, taking residents and passersby alike on a tour of their city's architecture.

An original painting by Shana Stern titled Oh I Wept hangs in the elevator bay at Waterford Bluffs. The painting was created only with the artist’s fingers and hands to apply paint, providing a bespoke element to the sleek interior.

Prints throughout Waterford Bluffs, including a cityscape of Cleveland by Michaels Lyric, further placemaking efforts at every opportunity. The comprehensive approach with attention to high impact installations in key areas elevate the modern design and engage residents with meaningful and locally-inspired artwork.

"ArtLifting is the best way to get quality original artwork anywhere and give back to the artistic community in so many ways. It was affordable, philanthropic and rewarding on all fronts.
Our hearts and our residents have been ArtLifted."

- Rick Cavenaugh, President, Stoneleigh Companies, LLC

“Being able to work with companies like Stoneleigh has allowed me to become financially independent and not have to rely on disability [income].”
