Helen Lewis
Washington, D.C.
Helen Lewis is a Washington, D.C.–based artist who has cultivated a distinctive practice through her work with Art Enables, a non-profit art gallery and studio dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to make, market, and earn income from their artwork. While her early artistic explorations centered on fiber arts, Helen discovered her true medium of choice in the Art Enables studio: watercolor. This vibrant and fluid medium has allowed her to translate her eye for detail and energetic imagination into a rich body of work.
Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the people around her, Helen's primary muses include flowers, people, and the beach. Her compositions are immediately recognizable for their meticulous construction, repeating shapes, and rhythmic motifs. Her paintings are much like Helen herself, achieving a balance between tranquility and playfulness.
Helen is known within the studio for her focus and the remarkably prolific nature of her art-making practice. Beyond her artistic discipline, she is beloved by her peers and the Art Enables staff for her mischievous, quick-witted humor and her ability to elicit laughter from her friends.
