Always Moving Forward
"After acquiring a disability, I started to evaluate the concepts of time: the past, the present and the future. The multiple layers, some of which are transparent, suggest our past experiences should not be concealed because they make the beings we are today. As I observe this growth and evolution in myself and the world around around me, the repeated swirls in my work mirror life’s continuity which lead the viewer’s eye on a journey. Throughout the journey of life, the adversities, ups and downs, everything eventually comes full circle. The practice of pouring and splattering different consistencies of paint, allowing the natural interactions to happen is the result of a newfound freedom and acceptance. As a result, the beauty of all the detailed imperfections are highlighted. We must embrace the beautiful imperfections within ourselves as well as each other and appreciate the beauty of the present moment. I use a range of unconventional tools, i.e., using my wheelchair or the wheels from old wheelchairs to move/mix fluid paints and create track marks. I encourage viewers to see the wheelchairs as tools or catalysts that can move things forward, create change and, as a result, create something beautiful and magical. The track marks enforce the idea that everyone makes their own unique mark in this world. Despite the way in which each of us navigate the world, we are all important contributors to society. As we look towards the future, we must understand that everyone is capable of making a difference and moving the world forward."
