"Estela is a reflection on remembrance, love, and the invisible ways people continue to shape our lives long after they are gone. The piece honors those whose love, generosity, wisdom, heart, and grace continue to influence the lives of those who knew them.
Painted with simplified organic forms and expressive lines, this piece focuses on symbolism rather than representation. The deep blue background creates a contemplative space, while the white iris floats within an abstract composition of wilted blue blossoms. The layers represent the intersections of the stories we carry and the lives that shape us. The result is less a portrait and more an expression of both a sobering and dreamlike remembrance.
I paint what I sometimes cannot put into words. In remembrance of Estela, always caring for others, always making those around her feel seen and valued, selflessly kind and truly thoughtful. Reflecting on her life inspired me to create a work that honors the lasting impact one person can have on those around them. This piece serves as a point of recognition, acknowledgment, and honor of who she is to me.
Weeks after I received the results of a clean PET/CT scan, Estela passed away from cancer. She called me her favorite warrior. Experiencing those two realities so close together deepened my awareness of life's fragility and the mystery of why some stories continue while others end without reason.
The white iris carries an additional layer of meaning. It represents my Mima, Iris, who passed away from cancer when I was three years old. Even with only a few memories of her, her presence remains woven into my story. By incorporating the iris, the painting became a bridge between generations of remembrance, connecting those who I have loved in this lifetime.
This piece belongs to Estela's twin sister, Maribel."
