"Dreamers reflects on the importance of holding onto hope, especially after a dream has already come true. The painting explores the tension between gratitude and disappointment, fulfillment and longing. It is a reminder that dreams are not destinations, but invitations to continue believing and imagining what is possible.
This piece combines expressive texture with simplified forms, allowing the palm trees to become the focal point of the composition. Layers of warm pink, orange, and gold create an atmosphere reminiscent of a Los Angeles sunset, while bold areas of blue ground the work and create contrast. The textured palms were created using an impasto technique, giving them a tactile presence that emphasizes their importance within the landscape.
I created Dreamers after reflecting on my journey from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Living in Los Angeles had been one of my biggest dreams, and when I finally moved into a tiny apartment in Koreatown in 2019, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. The apartment was far from glamorous, complete with cockroaches and constant financial challenges, but I was living in the city I had always dreamed of calling home. As the realities of adulthood and financial uncertainty set in, I found myself losing sight of the dreams that had once felt so alive.
One day, while looking out my apartment window, I watched the palm trees sway. In that moment, it felt as though they were whispering, “Dreams come true.” They reminded me of how far I had come and how easy it is to overlook fulfilled dreams while focusing on present struggles. The painting captures that quiet realization. More than a depiction of a landscape, Dreamers is an invitation to remember what has already been achieved, remain grateful for the journey, and never stop dreaming."
