Delta One Lounge LAX

Los Angeles, CA

Alicia Sterling Beach’s Butterfly of the Mountain, a vibrant, 11-foot by 6-foot, wall-mounted sculpture, anchors the lounge area. The artwork is composed of vertically arranged, painted basswood planks in varying lengths, forming an abstract silhouette reminiscent of butterfly wings. The planks are painted in a gradient of colors—soft blues, pinks, greens, purples, reds, and neutrals—that create a rhythmic visual flow. In the foreground, beige and white modern lounge chairs surround small tables.

Designing a First Impression

In 2023, Delta Airlines partnered with ArtLifting to bring original artwork into its new Delta One Lounge at LAX—a private check-in experience reserved for Delta’s most high-profile travelers. The custom art curation was designed to match the sophistication and privacy of the space, creating a modern yet humanizing environment from the very first touchpoint of the journey. Delta also prioritized featuring local Los Angeles artists, contributing to a sense of localized placemaking and grounding the experience in the cultural richness of the city.

ArtLifting’s curation played a key role in defining the visual identity of this premium lounge, as the artworks offer an energizing contrast to the neutral palette of the lounge. Four artworks were selected to bring a sense of movement, elegance, and originality to the terminal’s clean architectural design: two striking, large-scale mixed media pieces by Eric Santamaria; and two works by Alicia Sterling Beach, including a large scale, dynamic basswood sculpture and an acrylic and rich gold leaf painting on canvas. The curated mix of textures and scale adds a sense of refinement while highlighting the individuality of each artist’s story and perspective.

This project builds on Delta’s growing partnership with ArtLifting, which also includes original artwork acquisitions for the Delta One terminal at JFK. Through the integration of original artworks by talented artists with disabilities, Delta enhances the visual and emotional experience of its luxury terminals while demonstrating a clear commitment to inclusive, community-driven design.
