The Tower Knot

"This started out as a pencil practice. I was pleased with the results so I made a color version. I need to hone my hand and eye until drawing swirling Celtic lines becomes second nature. Creating these lines was really fun. I had no mind to give it any formal structure focusing more freely on form. Starting with pencil lines, I used Indian ink to line the work. Then I added the webbing - the wee bits of dirt in each corner where lines cross. Then watercolor. This was originally inspired (long ago) by The Book of Kells - an ancient illuminated gospel - with gospel verses adorned with Celtic motifs. But these days the inspiration comes from the body of work I have established. So I guess I kinda inspire myself."
