"My paintings emerge from the meeting of two landscapes that have shaped my life: the quiet restraint of Japanese aesthetics and the exuberant vitality of the Brazilian Amazon. As a Japanese-Brazilian artist, I have always inhabited both worlds. Rather than choosing between them, I allow them to exist together on the same surface. Fusion draws inspiration from the idea of the “estrangement effect”: when something familiar appears in an unexpected place, it invites us to pause, question our assumptions, and discover new ways of seeing. At first glance, this painting suggests the calm harmony of traditional Japanese landscapes. Their balanced compositions, layered spaces, and contemplative atmosphere evoke the visual language of Japanese impressionist prints. Yet, slowly, another world begins to appear. In this painting, white egrets drift across a landscape where Japanese kimono design and Amazonian layered forests merge into one. These unexpected encounters interrupt our expectations. They invite us to pause, to question what belongs where, and to discover beauty in the meeting of cultures that might seem far apart."
