Dreamy Jazz

"This artwork, Dreamy Jazz, is a part of a collection that is connected to the theme of sustainability. I cut, sewed and painted jean textile scraps from New York City fashion houses. This was the first time that I explored sewing scraps of fabric together to create shapes for my painting. I am completely new to sewing. Spontaneous free-motion sewing felt so peaceful. Combining these jean fabric shapes with my abstract expression painting style felt dreamy. The spontaneous process of painting and moving the denim shapes around the composition, reminded me of improvised jazz music. It felt like a call and response. With each layer of paint, I would stop, look deeply at this painting and listen for the mood that was being communicated. Then I intuitively responded to that mood with a new layer of mark making. Dreamy Jazz captures the soulful joy I felt while painting in a trance-like state."
