"Baseline is the name of a dirt road in Joshua Tree, CA, just south of Highway 62 near the National Park. This is my take on a little house that's located there where I used to stay underneath the large boulders on 10 acres of land. I stayed there a lot with my partner when we wanted to get away from Los Angeles and find solace. It is a place very near and dear to my heart, and it will always be with me, even though we no longer stay at that particular place anymore - it is still a magical space. I use paper and fabric on top of sealed and cradled birchwood. I paint the paper, which is a thick, 120-pound, manila pattern paper. This is used in the apparel manufacturing industry. The fabrics are cotton bolt fabric that I carefully chose for its interesting patterns. All the pieces from this series, which I have titled "Rock & Refuge," come from residential architecture in Joshua Tree, CA, especially homes that were built close to the boulders by the National Park. I called the series Rock & Refuge because Joshua Tree is known as an artist's refuge to many, where everything slows: the mind, body, and the love affair with LA that has us hyperventilating and out of breath from being chased by everyday demands and lofty endeavors. It is a kind of Deadwood town where unique exteriors are built seemingly without codes or restrictions - a place of freedom and safety. For me, it was a home away from home and a quiet meditation. That is why I moved there."
