“When I make art, it is an expression of what I’m going through. It helps me focus on good things in my life. It is never too late to try again.”
Born in Chicago and raised in Patterson, Arkansas, artist Sheila Smith is excited to be a part of the ArtLifting community. Sheila lives with anxiety but has found respite in art, using painting to keep her mind focused on creative ideas rather than give in to worry. Creating art also enables Sheila to process and effectively communicate her thoughts and feelings. Her vibrant abstract designs express deep, personal sentiments without words.
Beyond cultivating positivity in her own life, Sheila hopes that her paintings will uplift others by inspiring “love, joy, comfort, and happiness.” In particular, she wants to serve as a source of hope and inspiration for others living with mental illness.
“I want to brighten people’s lives. I want to give people hope and encouragement so that they can find the courage to keep moving forward with their lives—no matter the struggles they live with.”
Creating art has inspired an emotional transformation within Sheila by helping her recognize her own value and inner beauty. She explains, “There is great potential inside. God showed me this through art.” Sheila has a positive outlook on her life and faith, and she feels optimistic for her career. Sheila is very grateful to those who support her work.
“As an artist, I’m very honored and blessed to have people hang my artwork in their home.”
