"I was born in NYC and always loved the city. As a kid, my father used to take us to Central Park. "We had moved to Yonkers NY in 1960, however my heart has always been in NYC. I remember one day at Central Park on a hot summer night, it was very foggy out, but my father said that it was smog, not fog, but the high riser's around the park was very colorful in the smog. I could still remember the smell, and definitely I remember the the humidity because we all were sweating. My family always thought that I was crazy because I had pictures of the city in my room. I even had a tattoo put on my left arm. My dream is for NYC to always be number one. Last year I went to the country of Georgia and most people I met there talked about one day to visit NYC. I wish I could take them all here. I always get messages on Facebook from people I met in Georgia to send them pictures and videos for them. So everyday I do send them all videos and photos right there on the spot. It's like a documentary of my life in NYC."

New York City
Born and raised in New York City, Ruben Lopez deems the city around him to be his biggest inspiration. He was formerly homeless for many years and recently gained housing in November 2015! He makes art every Tuesday at an open studio provided by Fresh Art, a NYC non-profit that produces public art exhibitions at various venues throughout the city.
Ruben shares, "I make art because I love the city and love to draw it. I want to sell my work so I can share it with people who can identify with city life."
Ruben firmly states that art has changed his life. Since he checked himself into Bellevue Hospital for rehab years ago, art therapy has helped him heal. Ruben now gives back by volunteering at the Bellevue Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program in Manhattan.
