Dennis has a passion for creating, and enjoys the sense of refuge he feels while making art. He has a unique sensitivity and way of seeing the world that helps to inform his unique artistic style. While creating art, Dennis describes feeling free to imagine, enter subconscious realms and draw and paint from his experiences directly onto his canvas. In addition to visual art, Dennis is a writer/columnist and writes quarterly for the online magazine the-essayist.org. He enjoys traveling to global cities and being in nature, both of which he says have inspired his work as an artist.
Dennis identifies with the 'outsider art' or art brut movement, which he describes as encompassing a variety of self-taught artists, often outside the classical hierarchy of the mainstream 'art world.' Dennis resonates with this movement, having never been 'formally trained' as an artist. Dennis lives with a mental illness, and the stigma he has experienced as a result made him take a less conventional path. He makes art as part of a community mental health program called “The Club House” in Santa Fe, NM, as well as in his small makeshift studio in his apartment.
One of Dennis’ dreams is to have his own studio space and abundant art supplies to work in larger scales. He hopes that sharing his work through ArtLifting will help make this financially and logistically possible and that increased exposure will lift him up to the commercial art world.
