Santa Fe, New Mexico
Dennis has a passion for creating, and enjoys the sense of refuge he feels while making art. He has a unique sensitivity and way of seeing the world that helps to inform his unique artistic style. While creating art, Dennis describes feeling free to imagine, enter subconscious realms and draw and paint from his experiences directly onto his canvas.
Dennis identifies with the 'outsider art' or art brut movement, which he describes as encompassing a variety of self-taught artists, often outside the classical hierarchy of the mainstream 'art world.' Dennis resonates with this movement, having never been 'formally trained' as an artist. Dennis lives with a mental illness, and the stigma he has experienced as a result made him take a less conventional path. He makes art as part of a community mental health program called “The Club House” in Santa Fe, NM, as well as in his small makeshift studio in his apartment.
In addition to visual art, Dennis is a writer/columnist and writes quarterly for the online magazine the-essayist.org. He enjoys traveling to global cities and being in nature, both of which he says have inspired his work as an artist.
