It Ain't Nothin' But a Party

Elizabeth Belstraz

$ 3,000.00

"This piece is a response to the "MEGACITIES ASIA" exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and is a red, white, and blue celebration of Boston and Cambridge's expansion through high rise construction, bridge reconstruction, and land use redevelopment.

As with the Megacities Asia show, I used many mass-produced objects; from the party store (symbolizing celebration), dollar store (symbolizing mass production), and craft store (symbolizing the crafts and arts): party decorations and streamers, paper napkins, tissue wrapping paper, stickers and yarns. My base is acrylic paints. The materials are finished with acrylic varnishes.

My process was both carefully planned and intuitive. The party decorations and streamers evoke a lively party. The discs adorned with mooncake printed tissue papers are reference to the moon time-traveling through the sky. The sections of Boston and Cambridge are made from my worn and torn subway system map as memories floating on the Charles River in continual flux. Flowers, both a common element in Asian decorations and American party themes are represented by the sunflowers, also a symbol of the sun. The cartoon composite female has her hair done up for the party. She celebrates all of the changes and asks, 'What will the future be?'"

"Art-making is my best friend and my spiritual practice."

Elizabeth Belstraz is a lifelong artist and graduate of The School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. For Elizabeth, art has become a particularly powerful practice during difficult times. She uses a variety of processes and materials to play with textures and colors that speak of different realities.

"Surviving challenges, including those in the areas of health and housing, has led me on a transformational journey through the arts. I love using diverse materials to make unseen social and spiritual realities visible!"

Elizabeth’s focus on the creative process leads her to different approaches for every piece. Her art methodology involves careful planning, and is inspired by various materials, a concept, an emotion, or a request for thematic work. Elizabeth works with liquid watercolors, inks, acrylic paints, pastels, wax, paper, used materials, pigments and minerals. Her art reflects inner psychological workings, spiritual concepts, emotions and feelings. They illustrate the beauty of nature, or commemorate cosmic and life events. She writes, "I like to add the pigments and minerals to the surface because to me, the shimmery surface evokes the etheric-spiritual aspect of art and life.”

Elizabeth is excited to sell her work through ArtLifting.
