“I want to share and make others happy.”
Artist Mercedes Kelly seeks to cultivate joy in her life through creating art about subjects that bring her great happiness, animals! In overcoming daily struggles with schizoaffective disorder, she remains optimistic: “I keep positive...I just hope for the best.” She works daily to create balance in her life the support of medication, prayer and art creation.
A self-described naturist, Mercedes primarily draws inspiration from the rural environments in which she grew up: “I used to live in the Dominican Republic with a yard full of animals. I paint these animals from my soul because I miss those animals.” Her preferred subjects are dogs, cats, birds, and other creatures that she encounters in rural areas of New York. She prefers to work in oil and acrylic on canvas.
Although she has been creating art since she was a child, when she taught herself, Mercedes delved into the formal study of art while earning a BS from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Following graduation, she continued on to study graphic design at Queens College, the School of Visual Arts, and the Art Students League. Mercedes has received high acclaim for her artistic pursuits--including winning a Blue Ribbon Juror’s Award from the Nazareth College Gallery in Pittsford, NY.
Mercedes aims to “live a good, faithful life through consideration for other people”--drawing on the teachings of her Baptist faith. Through art creation, Mercedes hopes to share the joy of her subject matter with her viewers. Simply put, “I want to make others happy.” Mercedes connects with others over art through volunteer work and participation in programs at Fountain House and the Fountain House Gallery, the premier venue in New York City representing artists living with mental illness. She hopes that through participation in ArtLifting, her work will become more prolific and well known.
