"The Clock Tower takes place in Downtown Santa Cruz. I took that picture with former Claraty Art instructor, Campbell Steers. I made this piece in January 2014. It is a local landmark."

PEN AND INK ON PAPER
4 5/8" x 7"
Santa Cruz, CA
"I want making art to be my job, I want people to know me through my artwork.”
AJ Redmond is a prolific artist who enjoys creating scenes that pay homage to Santa Cruz, California, his hometown of the past decade. Born in Oceanside, California in 1989, and relocated to Santa Cruz, AJ has quickly become a fixture in his community by capturing the details of Santa Cruz’s most popular pastimes: bike and motorcycle culture, and landmarks.
AJ wanted to be an artist since he saw a mural on the wall of his preschool classroom as a young child. In later years he developed more technical skills through art classes at school. In 2011, AJ joined The Claraty Arts Project, a Santa Cruz-based organization dedicated to the empowerment and education of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Since working with The Claraty Arts Project, AJ’s work has been featured at multiple exhibitions in the Bay Area, Southern California, and most recently at the Art + Autism show in Dallas, Texas.
AJ exhibits natural talent in any medium he utilizes. He prefers pen and ink because it demonstrates his meticulous eye for detail. He says, “I try to capture details and textures to express the beauty in real life.” It typically takes AJ about a month to complete one of his sought-after ink drawings.
AJ employs an interesting process when creating his pieces. He will generally start in a corner or in the center of his piece and work out from this starting point. He typically utilizes a reference image to start from, and then creates sketches with unique proportions. Observers of AJ’s process can see that his eye is attracted to patterns not seen by most, and that he uses different shading patterns in sequence to complete his drawings. The result is an impressive vision of a world that is beyond our everyday perspective.
AJ hopes that joining ArtLifting will help him to better market his work and create a name for himself as an artist.
