“I work to transcend my disabilities through painting”
Marcia has overcome several challenges including bipolar illness, alcoholism, and a period of homelessness. After achieving sobriety and leaving her job as an RN, Marcia was asked, "What have you always wanted to do?" Her answer came easily: “Art is my passion!” Marcia began to teach herself to draw and paint. Now, she identifies herself as an artist and paints nearly every day. “Painting helps me focus… I look forward every day to the meditative state I enter when I am making art.” Marcia attributes her ability to transcend mental illness on a daily basis to her creation of art. “Art helped me to overcome these challenges. It allows me to maintain serenity and contributes to my improved self esteem.”
Marcia has developed a unique artistic style by adopting a technique called "watercolor batik.” To create this look, Marcia first paints on rice paper. She then applies a layer of paraffin wax to the painting and crumples the work into a ball, allowing the wax to crack and form the underlying paint into a textured pattern. To finish the product, Marcia irons off the paraffin wax between layers of newspaper and repeats the process as necessary. This distinctive artistic style enables Marcia to combine color, texture and light patterns into a cohesive whole. Her final products are striking.
Marcia enjoys sharing her “love of beauty” with viewers of her work. She feels honored to see her art purchased and hung in others’ homes. “It makes me happy to be validated as an artist through the sale of my art.” Additionally, she notes, “selling my artwork helps to improve my standard of living.”
