Torii I
"The Torii Collection is inspired by the artist's studies, work, and travels in Japan and her Japanese-American heritage. The torii, which means "gate" and is often found at Shinto shrines, invites the viewer to imagine what can be seen beyond a barrier. The torii are painted flat black and embellished with gold and graphite, in high contrast to the glowing artist-made ink swaths of sappanwood. The gate itself is decorated with graphite continuous-line abstract faces as a nod to the artist's practice of closed-eye continuous linework to embrace the challenges of worsening vision due to optic neuritis. Torii I is the crown jewel of an extended collection and is the most current of the artist's focus and work."
