The Mosaic of Life

"The Mosaic of Life started out as an abstract painting which was created by cleaning off the excess paint on a palette. The colors were a different color scheme than what I usually use. The colors were maroon, orange and yellow. I used a palette knife with some acrylic white paint to spread the colors around. I decided it still needed something more, so I applied the rose gold acrylic ink in a random pattern. This proved to be too light and got lost. I decided to add a final layer of various sizes and colors of painted paper laid into different shapes, which created a new story. The beginning shape of the center became the main focus, and I decided it would represent a pomegranate, which means resurrection and life everlasting. It also resembles a shape that allowed me to think of other things it could be; a compass, or a sundial for example. This style helps me to study the use of colors, texture, movements, and directions. It gives me an understanding of reusing and recycling older paintings on paper. Instead of creating layers of wet paint; I studied the pieces of painted paper that were in front of me. This process gave me the opportunity to use the pieces like a puzzle. You can place, study, and change at will. Placing the painted pieces on top of a painted painting creates, what I call, a mosaic painting. It reminds me of my previous exposure to mosaic glass windows with my brother. I feel like I am channeling these paintings/windows through our past journeys."
