First Light
"The vibrant hot pinks, greens, and blues of early summer flowers illuminated by the morning sun serve as the inspiration for this painting. To begin, I applied a vivid background on my canvas using acrylic paint, layering it with various mark-making tools, stencils, and stamps. I searched for floral and leaf patterns, which I lightly outlined with a pastel stick. After taking a deep breath, I began painting the negative space with white paint. Once you make that commitment with the white paint, there's no going back. It took multiple sessions with the white paint to refine the shapes and mask the colourful background."
