As Always, Farther
"This painting is part of an ongoing effort I call Inner Garden Portraits, rooted in what I’ve learned through disability, caregiving, and personal healing. I believe we each carry an inner garden—a place where our own version of joy and calm grow. When we connect to it, even while in grief, we meet our strength and recharge with hope. Through shared, judgment-free conversations, I help people reconnect to that place. Together, we find “seed moments”—truths that still live inside them—and intuitively translate them, layer by layer, into an abstract, fluid visual language. This particular portrait reflects a shared purpose: to honor the light, worthiness, and resilience that never leave us; to notice how our fragilities can reveal our greatest strengths and the ways we give to others. In this story, I heard both the shatter coming from mental health challenges and the will to heal—to laugh in unison with the community that supports us and to remember to play. My intention was to celebrate worthiness not by hiding fracture, but by letting the joints carry light and growth from mended pieces. The path keeps changing, and still we keep walking—farther than we think we can, farther than we think we will, farther than we thought we ever would; finding unexpected surprises and colorful adventures along the way. I worked in several watercolor layers to build a semi-abstract, gestural, symbolic internal landscape, leaving collage and kintsugi-inspired seams visible so history remains part of strength. Two light sources, of landscape and of inner light, guiding the way forward. The title answers a question we might ask often—how far have I gone, how far can I go today?—with a gentle promise: no matter the distance, As always, farther."
