Pat Woods (she/her/hers)

Chicago

Pat is a Chicago native who has loved art since she was a young child. She studied art throughout her education and attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the ’80s. Pat describes “I make art to relax and create texture, form, and color. I love making broad strokes on the canvas. When I realize what I’ve painted, I enjoy looking at my art, and feel proud of what I am capable of creating.”

Pat formerly experienced homelessness but acknowledges that “I have worked my way back by achieving housing that has benefitted me with my art.” Pat now creates her art in her studio apartment and also works with Thresholds, a mental health agency in Chicago that provides mental health services for adults living with mental illness. She describes, “Thresholds has always seen to it that they’ve been by my side in my journey as a painter and an artist. I really feel I have support and it's made everything worthwhile!” Pat is an active participant at her church, where she plays the keyboard and helps to organize weekly Sunday services.

Pat continues to experience challenges obtaining adequate art supplies, including paints and canvases but is hoping that her participation in ArtLifting will help her to create more freely.  She describes feeling honored to share her work with a larger audience through ArtLifting and is grateful for people taking the time to look at and appreciate her artwork.
