The journey from the first half of life into the second half of life
Be prepared to journey
If you are in the early days of the journey
you might find more than you can bare
So go at your own pace
for with journeys of this kind
if you go too fast you just might miss yourself
Even so, you will most likely go back, find yourself, and pick up the journey where you left off
But it can be a bit bumpy if you are holding on too tight
Let go if you can
This courage will give you flight
Then you are carried by the movement of the wind
You are no longer walking the journey, you are the journey and the journey is walking you
You no longer have a choice
There is no return
Your shadows will meet you along the way
First they will fight and bare their teeth
And you will fight them back in fear for your life
But stay
Stay
Give up the fight
You have nothing to protect
Nothing to fear
Then they become your friends
Then you know who you are
You know they are you
And you are them
If you have many inner ones to keep
Keep them,
Lest no one gets left behind
Gather all of your selves
When you are all ready
All will see
You looking at you
Me looking at me

Christina Culverhouse (she/her/hers)

Austin, TX

“I create to give voice and language to express that for which there are no words.”

Christina is a dedicated artist and educator with over 20 years of experience in the fields of creative arts, education, and leadership. As a visual artist, Christina has an eclectic body of work in multi-media platforms. She has designed four websites and has landed several venues in Austin, Texas to showcase her art. She holds three degrees from St. Edward’s University in Austin: a Bachelor of Arts in Art, a Master of Arts in Teaching, and a Master of Arts in College Student Development.

For Christina, her art displays different aspects of her intra and interpersonal relationships and experiences. Christina also notes the importance of music in her creative process. She exclaims, “I have stories wrapped around my heart from the connections I have made with people that come to me as I create. From the momentary passersby to the deeply and profoundly connected, these stories are much like a melody. The notes are the colors, lines, and shapes in the paintings that visually portray the tune.”

Christina has an exceptional eye for innovation and creativity, extensive skills in strategic planning and leadership, as well as experience in education, assessment, and research. During her internships at St. Edward's University, she applied her skills to further the growth and development of the university's student service programs and departments. She had the leading role of establishing and managing social media platforms, brand identity, and enhancing the design and layout of websites for these programs and departments.

Currently, Christina is working as a freelance artist where she employs her talents and skills in painting, drawing, photography, layout production, and web design. She creates at Art Spark Texas, an organization offering inclusive arts programs and services to create positive change in the lives of people with disabilities.

...“Perhaps the most important layer is the story I have about myself that formed from one or more experiences. I spend a lot of time thinking about what 'makes me tick,' so to speak, both on the conscious and unconscious level - and all of that which 'makes me tick' directly impacts and influences the everyday choices, from the mundane to the seemingly more profound. So, as I create, all of this is interplaying in my mind, my heart, my body, and is then portrayed through poetic language and/or images on the canvas.”
