Under the Ties

"The ties that bind us, family and love and friends and joy and laughter, inspired this painting. I was working on a small series to commemorate the time that families spent enjoying each other's company during the Covid pandemic shut down. Beginning with a vivid blue acrylic marker, the color of the sky and full of calm happy energy, I make random marks on the canvas. Many layers of acrylic paint, pigment sticks, acrylic ink, markers, spray paint, and patterns follow, until the composition comes together. The vivid orange and the pattern of rectangle shapes, which brings to mind music and movement, provide a sense of excitement against the stable reassurance of the gray and pale aqua. A bit of gold leaf adds sparkle and cheer. For me, this piece is about what's most important in this life."
